Hahndorf

Germany in the Adelaide Hills — Australia's oldest surviving German settlement

Hahndorf, 28 km east of Adelaide in the hills, was settled in 1839 by Lutheran immigrants who came directly from Germany on a ship called the Zebra, naming the town after its captain Johann Hahn. It is the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia and looks the part: a single main street lined with stone cottages, butchers selling smoked meats, bakeries selling Stollen and Lebkuchen, and beer gardens.

The atmosphere is touristy in parts but the food genuinely reflects the heritage. The Hahndorf Inn is the most famous of the German beer halls and has been serving schnitzel and wheat beer since the 19th century. The Haus restaurant is a more serious option. The Hahndorf Academy holds a small museum of early settler history alongside an art gallery. On weekends in summer, the main street fills up — go on a weekday morning if you want to avoid the crowds.
