The Rundle Lantern is a 40-metre-high LED installation covering the facade of the Rundle Place car park. By day it looks like a glass curtain wall; at night it becomes a shifting display of commissioned artworks, event promotions, and community projects. It is managed as a public art space rather than advertising and genuinely changes the texture of Rundle Mall at night.
The work displayed varies — during the Fringe season it shows performance previews and artist commissions; at other times it might display collaborative community artwork or light-based commissions from local and international artists. It is controversial (some people find it garish) and interesting (most people end up watching it for longer than they expected).
