Chinatown and Gouger Street

Adelaide's Chinese restaurant district, running alongside the Central Market

Adelaide's Chinatown occupies the streets around Gouger Street, directly behind the Central Market. It is small by Sydney or Melbourne standards but genuine — the restaurants on Gouger have been feeding the city's Chinese community (and everyone else) since the gold rush era. The strip is best on weekend evenings when the restaurants are full and the street is animated.

Beyond the obvious dumplings and yum cha, Gouger Street has good Vietnamese and Malaysian options. The HQ Complex at the Hindmarsh Square end has morphed into a nightlife venue. The combination of the market during the day and restaurant dinner in the evening makes this the best block in the city for food.
