Penfolds' Magill Estate sits on the slopes above the eastern suburbs, only 7 km from the city centre — the original vineyard from which all Penfolds wine descends. Christopher Rawson Penfold planted the first vines here in 1844, and the cottage he built on the estate still stands. Grange — Australia's most celebrated wine — is still made from fruit grown partly at Magill, though most comes from other South Australian regions.
The cellar door is open daily for tastings. The Penfolds Grange Experience tour (bookable in advance, not cheap) includes a vertical tasting of old vintages and a visit to the underground cellar where Grange matures. The Magill Estate Restaurant on the property is one of the better places to eat in Adelaide, with the vineyard on three sides.
