Stravinsky Fountain

Tucked into the square beside Centre Pompidou, the Stravinsky Fountain is one of Paris's most playful public artworks. Sixteen colourful mechanical sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely sit in a shallow basin, spraying water in unpredictable arcs. Saint Phalle's pieces are bright, rounded, and exuberant — lips, a snake, a treble clef — while Tinguely's black metal contraptions clatter and spin like escaped factory parts. The whole thing was installed in 1983 as a tribute to Stravinsky's compositions, and each sculpture references one of his works. It is free, always accessible, and genuinely delightful even on a grey afternoon.
