Le Marais

Medieval neighbourhood of courtyards, museums, and falafel

Le Marais is Paris's most rewarding neighbourhood for an unstructured afternoon of wandering. Centred on the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, it escaped Haussmann's 19th-century demolitions almost entirely, so its medieval street pattern survives intact: narrow lanes, Renaissance mansions (hôtels particuliers), and quiet courtyards around every corner.

The neighbourhood has been the centre of Parisian Jewish life for centuries — the rue des Rosiers is still lined with falafel stands and kosher bakeries, though the community has contracted as rents have risen. The Marais also has the city's most visible LGBTQ+ scene, concentrated around rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie.

Start at Place des Vosges and work outward. The Musée Picasso and the Musée Carnavalet (free; history of Paris from Gallo-Roman times to the present) are the major museums. For lunch or snacks, the Marché des Enfants Rouges on rue de Bretagne is Paris's oldest covered market and excellent for eating from multiple stalls under one roof.
