Bamberg State Library

Princely library with manuscripts including the Bamberg Apocalypse

A working research library on the cathedral square, housed in the Neue Residenz, with one of the country's most important early manuscript collections. Rotating displays in the small public exhibition room show off pieces from the holdings — the Bamberg Apocalypse, the Henry II Sacramentary, the famous Bamberg Antiphonary. Not every visit catches the same items, but something always good is on view. Free.

A story
The library's prize possession is the Bamberg Apocalypse, an early 11th-century illuminated manuscript commissioned for Otto III in the workshop on Reichenau Island. It is one of the masterworks of Ottonian illumination and a UNESCO Memory of the World inscription.
