The municipal history museum, set in the half-timbered Alte Hofhaltung palace next to the cathedral. Permanent exhibits run from Bronze Age finds along the Regnitz through medieval guild life, the seventeenth-century witch trials (Bamberg burned several hundred women in the 1620s, the worst of the German hysterias), to nineteenth-century craft trades. The painted Crib Room — a vast Baroque nativity scene with mechanical figures — opens at Christmas and is worth timing a visit for.
