Villa Dessauer

City art gallery in a Wilhelmine industrialist's villa

A late-nineteenth-century villa built for a Jewish hops magnate, confiscated under the Nazis, and now used by the city for contemporary art exhibitions. The exterior is unchanged Gründerzeit grandeur; the interior has been opened up into well-lit gallery spaces. Programme leans toward serious contemporary work and historically aware shows. Combined with a walk through the surrounding Berggebiet residential streets, easy to fit into a morning.
