The Benedictine abbey on the highest of Bamberg's seven hills, founded in 1015. Sacked, rebuilt, secularised in 1803 and turned into a poorhouse; now municipally owned and undergoing decades-long restoration. The complex includes a Baroque church with a celebrated painted ceiling of medicinal herbs, terraced monastery gardens that drop south toward the river, and the Franconian Brewery Museum.
The abbey church reopens to visitors only intermittently during restoration; the gardens and terrace views over the old town are open year-round.
