The narrow cobblestoned street that runs along the foot of the cathedral hill — Bamberg's main bar strip. By day it is quiet, half-timbered, picturesque; by night, every student in the city is on it. The Sandkerwa folk festival in late August takes place along its length: roast pork on every street corner, beer in stein-sized mugs, and a hundred thousand visitors filling the lanes. Outside festival weeks it is just a pleasant place to wander between drinks.
