The third-largest port in Europe and the reason Hamburg exists. Container ships, tugs, dredgers and harbour ferries crisscross the Elbe day and night, and a one-hour barge tour from the Landungsbruecken is one of the best ways to grasp the scale of the place — you pass under the cranes of the container terminals and through the historic Speicherstadt canals. The HADAG public ferries (line 62 to Finkenwerder) cover similar ground for the price of a normal HVV ticket.
