Landungsbrücken

The Landungsbrücken — landing bridges — is the great floating pontoon along the north bank of the Elbe where harbour ferries and tour boats tie up. The 700-metre line of mooring piers rises and falls with the tide and is fronted by a long Art Nouveau and Imperial pavilion built between 1907 and 1911, with twin towers at the western end.

The whole stretch is one of the city's most popular waterfronts, busy from early morning with commuters taking the public ferry to work in the docks and tourists boarding harbour cruises. The pavilion houses fish-bun stalls and a pair of historic ships — the four-masted Rickmer Rickmers (1896) and the cargo steamer Cap San Diego (1962) — both open as museum ships. The HADAG public ferry line 62 to Finkenwerder is the cheapest harbour cruise in the city.
