The neo-Renaissance city hall, finished in 1897 to replace one lost in the 1842 fire and built on 4,000 oak piles to keep it from sinking into the marshy ground. The 112-metre facade is studded with bronze figures of German emperors and the building has 647 rooms — more than Buckingham Palace. Guided tours of the staterooms take about 45 minutes and cost a few euros. The Rathausmarkt out front is the city's main civic square.
