St. Michaeliskirche

Baroque church with Hamburg's iconic copper-green spire

Hamburg's defining baroque church, known to locals as the Michel. The 132-metre copper-green spire is the symbol of the city and a working landmark for ships coming up the Elbe. Take the lift (or 452 steps) to the viewing platform for the best panorama of the harbour and the old town. The bright white interior is unusually plain for a baroque church — the original was destroyed by fire in 1750 and again by lightning in 1906; the current rebuild dates from 1912.
