A handful of streets between the Michaeliskirche and the docks — Ditmar-Koel-Strasse, Englische Planke, Ditmar-Koel-Strasse — make up Hamburg's Portuguese Quarter, a legacy of Portuguese, Spanish and Galician sailors who settled here from the 1960s onwards while working the container port.
A dozen pastelaria-style cafés, charcoal grills and small restaurants serve charcoal-grilled sardines, bacalhau, vinho verde and pasteis de nata. Casa Madeira and Lago Azul are reliable. The neighbourhood is most active on warm summer evenings, when the entire strip puts tables on the pavement and the smoke from the grills hangs in the air. Best reached on foot from the Landungsbrücken in about five minutes.
