Rickmer Rickmers

The Rickmer Rickmers is a green-hulled, three-masted barque, built in 1896 for the Rickmers shipping family for the Asian rice trade. Moored permanently in front of the Landungsbrücken pavilion since 1987, she is now an open-decks museum ship explaining the late great age of commercial sail.

The visit covers the upper deck, the captain's cabin, the forecastle and crew quarters, and a series of exhibition rooms below the main deck on the ship's history — including her interim careers as a Portuguese training ship and as a barracks hulk in the Azores. Allow an hour. The on-board restaurant in the stern serves passable Hamburg-style fish soup at fair prices and is a nicer harbour-side lunch than most of the Landungsbrücken cafés.
