Granitz Hunting Lodge

The Jagdschloss Granitz crowns a wooded ridge in the southeastern part of the island, a pseudo-medieval hunting lodge built by the princes of Putbus in the 1830s. The four corner towers and the central donjon, added later, give it the air of a small castle rather than a hunting box. The view from the top of the central tower — reached via the famous cast-iron spiral staircase — takes in most of southeast Rügen.

Inside, period rooms display weapons, hunting trophies, and the history of the Putbus family. The walk up through the beech forest from Binz takes about an hour and is part of the experience; alternatively the Rügen narrow-gauge railway stops at Jagdschloss station nearby.

A story
Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus built the lodge in the 1830s and added the central tower at the suggestion of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The cast-iron spiral staircase inside the tower, 154 steps with no central support, was designed to make the climb as theatrical as possible. It is now arguably the lodge's most famous feature.
