Mönchgut Peninsula

The Mönchgut peninsula is the elongated southeast tip of Rügen — a fingerlike strip of land, low cliffs, dunes, and inland heath, with a remarkable density of preserved traditional houses. It belonged to the Eldena Abbey monks (the name means 'monk-good') from the thirteenth century, which limited development and gave the peninsula its distinctive isolated character.

The villages of Baabe, Göhren, Lobbe, and Gager are linked by quiet roads and well-marked cycle paths. The Mönchguter Museum chain in Göhren — five small house-museums covering fishing, farming, and rural life — is the cultural anchor. The high point is the Bakenberg overlooking the cliffs at the south end, with a path down to the dramatic Suhrendorf beach.
