Ralswiek is a small village on the inland Bodden water in the north of the island, home to a nineteenth-century Schloss in a Romantic French-style park and — much more famously — the Störtebeker Festspiele, an open-air summer theatre that draws over 300,000 visitors a year.
The festival, running since 1993, tells the story of the medieval Baltic pirate Klaus Störtebeker across multiple evenings, with horses, ships, fire, and an enormous outdoor amphitheatre on the water. It is the largest open-air theatre festival in Europe by attendance. Shows run from late June to early September; tickets sell out months ahead.
Outside the festival season the village is quiet, with the lake, the small Schloss park, and a couple of restaurants.
