Vitt is a tiny fishing village of fourteen reed-thatched, single-storey cottages clustered around a stone harbour at the foot of the Cape Arkona cliffs. The whole settlement is a listed historical monument, with no cars and almost no commerce — a smoked-fish stand, a small chapel above the village, and that is about it.
The village is reachable only on foot, either down the cliff path from Cape Arkona (steep but short) or along the beach from Nobbin (longer, level). The walk in and out is the point: the cluster of thatched roofs revealed below as you come over the cliff edge is one of the best moments on Rügen.
The eighteenth-century chapel sits on the cliff above the village. The smoked herring and mackerel sold from the small Räucherei beside the harbour are excellent, taken with a beer on the wooden bench overlooking the boats.
