Wissower Klinken

Just south of the Königsstuhl, the Wissower Klinken are a smaller, more dramatic set of chalk pinnacles — at least, they were until the great collapse of 2005, which sheared off most of the seaward face overnight. What remains is still striking and visible from the Hochuferweg cliff path between Sassnitz and the Königsstuhl visitor centre.

The pinnacles cannot be accessed from below since the collapse — the beach at their foot is closed for safety. The viewing point from the cliff-top trail is the place to see them. Combine with the longer walk through Jasmund National Park; the Wissower Klinken sit roughly halfway along the Sassnitz–Königsstuhl route.

A story
The Wissower Klinken were the cliffs Caspar David Friedrich is generally believed to have painted in his 1818 masterpiece 'Chalk Cliffs on Rügen'. A large chunk of the cliffs collapsed into the sea in February 2005, taking with it most of the formation that matched the painting most closely.
