San Benedetto

San Benedetto is the southern of the great paired churches on Via dei Crociferi, set behind an arched bridge connecting the church to the adjacent Benedictine convent across the street. The arrangement was deliberate: cloistered nuns could attend Mass without ever entering public space.

The interior is one of the most lavish in the city, with frescoes, gilt stucco, and a curved nuns' choir at the back set behind a grilled window. The church is generally open in the morning; tours of the convent itself are occasionally organised through the diocese.
