La Scogliera

La Scogliera is the rocky coast immediately north-east of central Catania, where the 1669 lava flow met the sea and froze in jagged black ledges. The local solution to the lack of sand has been to lay out concrete swimming platforms among the rocks, which the city uses heavily in summer.

The neighbourhood of San Giovanni li Cuti, on a small fishing harbour in the lava field, has a string of fish trattorias that serve some of the freshest cooking in Catania. Reach it on the seafront road from the centre, about a thirty-minute walk.
