Sant'Agata al Carcere

Sant'Agata al Carcere — Saint Agatha at the Prison — is the church built on the spot traditionally identified as the cell where Catania's patron saint was imprisoned before her martyrdom in 251 AD. The present church is a Norman-period building with later baroque additions, set against the old city wall near the amphitheatre.

The crypt is the main interest: a small bare stone room, said to be the original cell, with a worn flagstone reputed to bear the footprint of Sant'Agata. The church is a major stop in the February festival but reasonably quiet at other times.
