Elisabetin

Elisabetin is the early-20th-century residential district south of Cetate, named after Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria-Hungary. It is the most architecturally consistent of Timisoara's older neighbourhoods — long terraced streets of two- and three-storey Secession and inter-war villas, many with small front gardens.

The district has none of the central tourist sights but is the best example in the city of intact Habsburg-era residential streetscape. Two squares, Crucii Square (Piata Crucii) and St. Mary Square (Piata Sfânta Maria), are the local civic centres. The St. Mary Square plague column, raised in 1865, is one of the most graceful monuments in the city. A short walk south brings you to the Roses Park and the Bega.
