Cathedral of the Ascension

The small Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord, on the western edge of Union Square, is the Romanian Orthodox parish church for the central district. It was built in the early 20th century in a Brâncovenesc revival style — the late-baroque Romanian vernacular originally associated with the 17th-century princely architecture of Wallachia.

The exterior is recognisable from a distance for its arcaded porch and the distinctive twisted columns of the doorway. The interior is densely painted in traditional fresco, executed in the 1930s by the Romanian church painter Anastase Demian. The cathedral is open most mornings and the visit pairs naturally with a walk through Union Square next door.
