The Roses Park (Parcul Rozelor) on the southern bank of the Bega Canal is the city's signature park — a 4.5-hectare formal garden of roses laid out in 1891 by the Romanian-French landscape designer Bertha Csanády. At peak in June and early July, more than 7,000 individual rose bushes representing several hundred cultivars are in bloom across the geometric beds.
The park is the setting for the annual Timisoara Roses Festival in early summer, with the open-air summer theatre at the centre hosting concerts and rose-judging competitions. Pedestrian and bike paths from the park run east along the Bega to the old centre and west toward Continental Hotel and Iulius Mall. Even outside the bloom, the park's mature trees and rose-pruning hedges keep it pleasant the rest of the year.
