Franciscan Church

The Franciscan Church (Biserica Franciscana) on Marasesti Street is a small late-Baroque church completed in 1733, one of the first ecclesiastical buildings the Habsburgs put up in the city after taking it from the Ottomans in 1716. The plain stuccoed exterior contrasts with the densely decorated interior, with painted vaulted ceilings, a high gilded main altar, and several side chapels.

The attached Franciscan monastery cloister is open to the public on most weekdays and is an unexpected pocket of quiet just off the busy central streets. The covered walk around the cloister has a small set of historical exhibits on the order's presence in Timisoara since 1318. The church and monastery sit one block north of Union Square.
