Trajan Square

Trajan Square (Piata Traian) is the central square of the Fabric district, a long open plaza lined with Eclectic and Secession buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It has the character of a small provincial centre — slightly faded, quieter than Cetate, with mature plane trees down the centre and a row of cafes along the eastern edge.

A monument to the Roman emperor Trajan stands at the western end of the square, gifted in the early 20th century to mark the supposed Roman roots of the city. The Sunday flea market in the square is one of the better street markets in Romania, particularly for antiques and Habsburg-era ephemera. The square is connected to the central Cetate by a 15-minute walk along Strada 3 August 1919.
