Fabric Synagogue

The Fabric Synagogue, also called the Orthodox Synagogue of Fabric, sits at the heart of the old industrial district east of Cetate. It was built in 1899 in a Moorish-Revival style — a brick-and-stone front with twin onion-domed towers and an arched main doorway, broadly similar in idiom to the Cetate Synagogue but smaller and more intimate.

The synagogue served the Orthodox Jewish community of the Fabric district, who lived and worked in the industrial neighbourhood. The interior preserved much of its original woodwork through the post-war decades when it stood largely empty, and partial restoration has reopened it for visits and occasional events. The Fabric district had two further synagogues — Sephardic and New — both within a five-minute walk.
