National Museum of Banat

The National Museum of Banat occupies most of Huniade Castle. Its collections cover the archaeology, history, ethnography and natural sciences of the Banat region — the wide plain that stretches across western Romania, eastern Serbia and southern Hungary. It is among the largest and oldest regional museums in Romania, founded in 1872.

The archaeological collection is the strongest, with material from Iron Age Dacian sites, Roman frontier finds, and a substantial medieval section that includes the original architectural fragments of the early castle. A separate ethnographic section displays regional folk costumes, household objects and tools from the multi-ethnic villages of the Banat. The museum is staged across multiple floors and rooms, and even with the slow-running restoration the open sections are worth two hours of serious looking.
