Corneliu Miklosi Public Transport Museum

The Corneliu Miklosi Public Transport Museum sits inside an old tram depot in the Fabric district, on the eastern side of the city. The collection is a complete history of public transport in Timisoara: horse-drawn trams from the 1870s, electric trams from 1899 onwards, trolleybuses, buses, snow ploughs and maintenance vehicles.

The depot is huge — a converted brick-built tram hall — and the collection genuinely fills it. Many of the trams are kept in running order and a handful are used on special "heritage line" runs through the city on summer weekends. The displays include original ticket vending machines, depot blueprints, and 19th-century maps of the tram network. The museum is named after the engineer who oversaw the transition to electric traction in 1899.

A story
Timisoara was the first European city to introduce horse-drawn trams (1869) and one of the first to install electric street lighting (1884) and electric trams (1899). The museum's centrepiece is a working 1899 wooden electric tram — the original rolling stock that ran the inaugural line, restored in the 1990s and still occasionally taken out for ceremonial runs.
