The largest of Nassau's forts, built between 1787 and 1819 and named for Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. It commands the hill west of downtown, looking out over the western entrance to Nassau harbour. The complex divides into three sections — Fort Charlotte proper, Fort Stanley, and Fort D'Arcy — connected by dry moats and underground passages.
You can clamber through the dungeons (genuinely dark, sometimes alarmingly so), climb the cannon-lined ramparts, and walk the parade ground. The waxwork tableaux in the dungeons are dated but charming. Free admission. Guided tours by local volunteers are excellent; tip generously. The fort hosts the Junkanoo Summer Festival events on its grounds.
