Government House

The official residence of the Governor-General of the Bahamas, built in 1801 in the same pink Georgian colonial style as the parliament buildings. It sits at the top of the steep Mount Fitzwilliam, with a statue of Christopher Columbus at the foot of the front steps facing down toward the harbour.

The house itself is not normally open to the public, but the Changing of the Guard ceremony held every other Saturday at 10 am is worth catching for the police marching band in white pith helmets. The hilltop gives a fine view down to Bay Street. Most visitors stop in passing on the walk between Bay Street and the Queen's Staircase.
