Housed in Villa Doyle, an 1860s mansion on West Hill Street, the NAGB is the most serious cultural institution in Nassau and the best place to understand the Bahamas through its artists. The permanent collection covers a century of Bahamian art — Amos Ferguson's naive paintings, Brent Malone's lush landscapes, Antonius Roberts's woodcarvings — and rotating exhibitions show contemporary work.
The villa itself is a treat: pink stucco, dark wooden floors, ceiling fans, a courtyard garden with sculptures. Allow an hour. The gallery is closed Mondays and most major holidays. Admission is modest and the gift shop has a good selection of art books and prints you won't find elsewhere.
