Versailles Gardens and Cloisters

A formal terraced garden on Paradise Island, originally laid out by the supermarket heir Huntington Hartford in the 1960s as the centrepiece of his transformation of Hog Island into a luxury destination. The terraces step down toward the harbour through clipped hedges and statuary; at the top sits a genuine 14th-century French cloister, dismantled from a French monastery and reassembled stone by stone.

The gardens are free to wander and remain blessedly quiet despite being a short walk from Atlantis. Now part of the Ocean Club resort grounds; non-guests are welcome to walk through. Sunsets here look back over Nassau Harbour and are one of the underrated views in the Bahamas.

A story
The 14th-century French cloister was bought, dismantled, shipped to America, and bought again by **Huntington Hartford** in 1962, who had it rebuilt stone-by-stone on Paradise Island. It is the oldest piece of architecture in the Bahamas — by about six hundred years.
