Teatro del Libertador General San Martín

Córdoba's main opera house and concert hall, opened in 1891 and considered one of the best Italianate theatres in South America. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium has four tiers of boxes and a remarkable wooden floor that can be raised level with the stage to convert the space into a ballroom.

The regular season runs March to December with opera, ballet, classical, and some musical theatre. Tickets are inexpensive by international standards. Guided tours of the building run on weekday afternoons.

A story
When the theatre opened in 1891 the orchestra pit was designed to accommodate a full Italian opera company on tour from Buenos Aires — Córdoba's high society would not be outdone. The acoustic boards beneath the stage were reportedly tuned by a single carpenter who tested them by clapping in different positions for three days.
