The Iglesia de las Nazarenas is the home of the Señor de los Milagros ("Lord of the Miracles"), the most important devotional image in Peru. The original mural, painted on a hut wall in 1651 by an Angolan freed slave, miraculously survived repeated earthquakes that flattened everything around it. The mural is now built into the main altar of the church; a copy is paraded through Lima for several days every October before crowds of more than a million.
The church itself is 18th-century Baroque, with a single nave and a much-rebuilt interior after the 1746 quake. Open most days for visits and Mass, but the October processions are a complete shutdown — central Lima fills with purple-robed worshippers carrying the heavy anda (litter) through the streets.
