Museo Oro del Perú

Vast private collection of pre-Columbian gold and military arms

The Museo Oro del Perú in Surco, on the southeast edge of Lima, holds the collection of arms-dealer Miguel Mujica Gallo: an enormous private hoard of pre-Columbian gold and silver objects, ceremonial weapons, and feather work, plus the world's largest private collection of historical military arms — armour, swords, and firearms from medieval Europe through the Second World War.

The collection has had authentication controversies in the past — independent reviews in 2001 questioned the authenticity of many gold pieces — and it is no longer as visited as the Larco. But it still has many genuine and spectacular objects, plus the eccentric weapons collection on the floor above. Less convenient than other museums; take a taxi.
