Plaza de Toros de Acho

The oldest bullring in the Americas, dating from 1766

On the north bank of the Rímac river, across the colonial Puente de Piedra, the Plaza de Toros de Acho opened in 1766 and is the oldest bullring in the Americas — the second-oldest in the world, after Seville. Built by Viceroy Manuel de Amat y Junyent, it holds about 13,000 spectators in a deep, narrow octagonal ring of red-painted wooden seats.

The main Feria del Señor de los Milagros runs through October each year, with fights every Sunday. Outside the bullfighting season, the small Museo Taurino on the site displays costumes, posters, and Goya prints connected to Peruvian bullfighting. The surrounding Rímac district is rough — go and return by taxi.

A story
Plaza de Acho is the second-oldest bullring in the world, after the Maestranza in Seville, and has held bullfights every October without break since 1766. Even during Peru's brief 1970s ban on bullfighting, the arena hosted unofficial fights.
