Parque de las Leyendas

Zoo and botanical garden combining wildlife with adobe ruins

The Parque de las Leyendas is Lima's main zoo, but it is more interesting than that: the 100-hectare park is organised by Peru's three ecological zones — coast, highlands (sierra), and jungle (selva) — and you walk between Andean condors, Amazon anacondas, and Pacific sea lions in sequence. The grounds also contain a working pre-Inca site, the Huaca San Miguel, with adobe pyramids dotted between enclosures.

A reasonable half-day for families and a useful introduction to Peruvian fauna before heading on to the Andes or Amazon. Quietest on weekday mornings; weekends are busy with Lima school groups. Easy taxi from Miraflores.
