Kuanzhai Xiangzi (Wide and Narrow Alleys) is a restored Qing-dynasty neighbourhood in the city centre, comprising three parallel lanes of traditional courtyard houses. The restoration, completed in 2008, was controversial for its thoroughness — the original fabric was largely demolished and rebuilt — but the result is pleasant and lively, particularly in the evening when lanterns illuminate the courtyard restaurants and teahouses. The lanes are Chengdu's most photographed area and the obvious starting point for a first day in the city.
