Yongling Mausoleum is the tomb of Wang Jian, founder of the Former Shu kingdom during the Five Dynasties period. The low mound hides a stone burial chamber decorated with musicians and attendants, a reminder that Chengdu's history runs much deeper than pandas, hotpot, and teahouses.
It is a good counterpoint to Chengdu's busier temples and museums. The site is quiet, central enough to combine with other stops, and especially worthwhile if you enjoy early medieval Chinese history or want a less crowded historical sight inside the city.
