Chengdu Art Museum

The Chengdu Art Museum, opened in 2021, is a large public institution focused on Chinese contemporary art, with a secondary programme of international exhibitions. The building, designed with the preserved Ming city wall running through its lower floors, is architecturally interesting in its own right.

The permanent collection covers Chinese art from the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular attention to Sichuan-based artists. Temporary exhibitions rotate regularly and have included significant international loans. Admission is free. Located in the People's Park area, it is a short walk from Tianfu Square.

A story
The Chengdu Art Museum is built around a preserved section of the Ming-dynasty city wall, which runs through the building's lower floors in a clever piece of architectural integration. The wall section was discovered during construction and preserved in situ rather than demolished — a decision that reflects a shift in Chinese municipal attitudes toward historical remains that was not always evident in earlier decades of rapid redevelopment.
