Qingcheng Shan (Green City Mountain) is a sacred Taoist mountain 65 km northwest of Chengdu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most atmospheric mountain landscapes in Sichuan. The front mountain has well-maintained stone paths leading through forest to ancient Taoist temples, interspersed with teahouses serving rabbit meat and Sichuan snacks to hiking tourists.
The back mountain is less developed and more forested, with challenging paths through bamboo groves to higher temples. Allow a full day; the mountain is best visited on a weekday when the crowds are thinner. Combined with the Dujiangyan irrigation system nearby (also a UNESCO site), it makes a good two-day excursion from Chengdu. High-speed train to Dujiangyan, then bus or taxi.
