Sichuan Opera (Bianlian)

Sichuan opera is distinct from Beijing opera in being more acrobatic, more comedic, and more focused on spectacular physical effects. The most famous of these is face-changing (bianlian), where performers switch elaborate painted masks in fractions of a second. Other specialties include fire-breathing, shadow puppet sequences, and comic interludes.

Several performance venues in Chengdu offer nightly shows aimed at tourists: the Shufeng Yayun Tea House near Qingyang Palace and the performances at the Jinli Ancient Street area are the most accessible. Arrive early for the pre-show — the backstage preparation and costume room is often viewable, and performers practice in the courtyard. Shows last about 90 minutes and come with tea service.

A story
Face-changing (bianlian) is Sichuan opera's most celebrated trick: the performer changes elaborate painted silk masks in under a second, again and again, sometimes a dozen times in quick succession. The technique has been a closely guarded secret for over 300 years. Apprentices study for years before being taught the method, and performers have reportedly been expelled from troupes for revealing it. Repeated slow-motion video analysis has largely decoded the mechanism, but the speed and theatrical effect remain genuinely astonishing even once you understand the method.
