Sichuan University Campus and Museum

Sichuan University's Huaxi Campus, east of the Jinjiang River, is one of the most architecturally distinguished university campuses in China. Founded by American missionaries in 1910, the original campus buildings blend Western academic architecture with Chinese decorative elements in a way that is both historically interesting and visually appealing.

The university's museums are open to the public: the Sichuan University Museum has a solid collection covering Sichuan archaeology, folklore, and ethnography; the Huaxi Medical History Museum documents the evolution of medicine in western China. The campus grounds are pleasant to walk through, with large trees and old stone paths. Located in the Jinjiang District, accessible by Metro Line 3.

A story
Sichuan University's Huaxi campus was established in 1910 by Protestant missionaries from three American denominations who pooled resources to build a Western-style university in inland China. The campus architecture combines Gothic and Romanesque elements with traditional Chinese roof lines — a style sometimes called "missionary Gothic" — and the old buildings have survived China's turbulent 20th century largely intact. The campus remains a functioning university; visitors can walk freely through the grounds.
