Delhi Gate

Delhi Gate sits on the eastern wall of the walled city, the gate through which travellers from Lahore and Delhi historically entered Multan. It is the largest of the surviving gates — two storeys high, with a barrel-vaulted carriageway wide enough for elephants — and was the principal ceremonial entrance under the later Mughal and Sikh governors.

The gate is in poor condition now and partly hemmed in by modern shopfronts, but it remains a vivid reminder of the scale of the eighteenth-century city. The bazaar inside the gate is one of the best in town for Multani pottery and the brightly embroidered khussa leather slippers that are a local speciality.
