Sawi Mosque

The Sawi Mosque is reputed to be the oldest surviving mosque in Multan, though no one is quite sure when it was built — estimates range from the late thirteenth to the fifteenth century. It is a ruin: the roof has gone, the walls are crumbling, and birds nest in the broken brickwork. The few panels of original blue glazed tile that still cling to the inner walls hint at how brilliant it must once have looked.

The mosque sits behind the Bahauddin Zakariya shrine on the fort mound and is easy to walk past without noticing. It is not actively used for prayer and is gradually being conserved by the Punjab archaeology department; a brief stop on the walk between the two great shrines is rewarding.
